If ever there was a wonderful, WAKE-UP call from Nature showing us how we can solve our environmental challenges, a colony of Czech beavers have built a dam EXACTLY where the local government needed it. And the tree-gnawing designers saved them around $1.2 million (£970,000).

Management staff in Brdy needed planning permission for a dam and reservoir project from the Vltava River Basin authorities. But the process was slow due to red tape.

That’s when eight beavers built their dam in the proposed location virtually overnight. When the staff woke up, their problems were solved. Despite their numbers, the beavers showed they were remarkable engineers.

Ecologists inspecting the dams said they will last a long time and drain the area well, while offering good conditions for the rare stone crayfish, frogs, and other species that thrive on wetlands.

Conservationists talk about species or landscapes performing ‘ecosystem services’ that benefit our home planet, Earth. The beavers in the Brdy Protected Landscape demonstrated this phenomenon in a stunning way. 💚
